The Environmental Education and Education for Sustainability Research Group at the University of Cyprus consists of members of academic and teaching staff, postgraduate students, doctoral candidates, specialized scientists and reaserch associates from the Department of Education at the University of Cyprus.  

Dr. Constantinos Korfiatis 
Associate Professor of Environmental Education

Constantinos Korfiatis is a Professor of Environmental Education at the Department of Education at the University of Cyprus, and the coordinator of the Environmental Education Research Group at the University of Cyprus. He studied Biology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and completed his doctoral dissertation in the Ecology Department of the same university. In the past, he worked as a research associate and taught in the Department of Biology and the Department of Primary Education at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Since 2003, he has been living in Cyprus and teaching at the Department of Education. Since 2016, he has been a member of the academic committee of the scientific society "European Researches in Didactics of Biology - ERIDOB". He is also a member of the curriculum restructurting committees for Biology and Evironmental Education/ Education for Sustainability of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus. He was a member of the working group for the establishment of legislative framework for Education for Sustainability at the Ministry of Education, Reaserch and Religious Affairs of Greece.

 Stella Petrou
PhD
Special Teaching Staff

Stella Petrou holds a position as Special Educational Staff in the Department of Education. She holds a bachelor's degree in Primary Education (University of Cyprus) and a master's and doctoral degree in Learning in Natural Sciences (Department of education, University of Cyprus).  

Her reaserch interests focus on the deveopment and evaluation of teaching materials and Environmental Education prgrams related to School Gardens and addressing the Climate Crisis, for primary school students of this age in the environmental actions. The findings of her reaserch have been presented at international and national conferences and she has published reaserch articles in international and greek journals and books.

Anthi Christodoulou
Phd
Special Scientist

Dr. Anthi C. Christodoulou graduated from the Department of Education of University of Cyprus and holds a master's and a doctoral degree in Natural Sciences and Environmental Education, also from the University of Cyprus. Her research interests focus on exploring and enhancing students' self-regulated environmental motivations. Part of her research work has been presented at various conferences and published in scientific journals. She has also participated in Action Research groups aiming to develop teaching methodologies for teachers in Science and Environmental Education. She works at the Cyprus Institute of the Sea and Shipping and teaches at the Department of Education at the University of Cyprus. 

 

 

Sophia Sergiou
Scientific Associate 

Sophia Sergiou completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Cyprus with a Bachelor’s degree in Education Sciences (2022) and her postgraduate studies in the Learning in Natural Sciences program, specializing in Environmental Education and Education for Sustainability (2024).

She works as a teaching and laboratory assistant in courses offered to undergraduate students of the Department of Education at the University of Cyprus, while also collaborating with the InSSTER group at the University of Nicosia.

Rafaella Mallouppa
Doctoral Candidate

Rafaella Mallouppa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics (Department of Physics, University of Cyprus) and a Master’s degree in Learning in Natural Sciences (Department of Education, University of Cyprus). She is also a Doctoral Candidate in the Learning in Natural Sciences program at the Department of Education, University of Cyprus.

 

Vasiliki Vasiliou
Doctoral Candidate

Vasiliki Vasiliou is a Doctoral Candidate in the "Learning in Natural Sciences and the Environment" program at the Department of Education, University of Cyprus. She studied Agricultural Science (integrated master’s) at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Primary Education at the University of Cyprus. Since 2023, she has been working as the Head of Gardens and Green Spaces at the Municipality of Engomi.

Christoforos Christofides
Doctoral Candidate

Christoforos Christofides holds a Bachelor’s degree in Primary Education (University of Cyprus) and a Master’s degree in "Learning in Natural Sciences and the Environment/Environmental Education and Education for Sustainability" (University of Cyprus). He is also continuing his studies in the doctoral program "Learning in Natural Sciences and the Environment" at the same department.
